Improving my utorrent connection?

i have utorrent and a linksys wrt54g router. my download speed is pretty slow for utorrent and i when i checked to see if the port was forwarded correctly it said it wasnt, i was wondering if anyone can tell me how to speed up my utorrent connection to faster download speeds. i think i just have to find out how to forward the port correctly. thanks.
