  1. Fortunato's cough becomes worse because of the NITRE or saltpeter and sulphur caked on the walls. I suspect that the Catacombs our narrator is leading poor Fortunato down is possibly connected to some geologic phenomena.

Medoc I'm not sure about, but De Grave sounds like "Something Serios" in French or Latin. 'Amontillado' is simple' It means 'Mounted' as in horseback. Think about it...'Mounted'. What does that bring to mind. Possibly tamed or domesticated? Or is it subjugated?

  2. Lack of air? c**p.(thin about  mine workers)

It could have been damp affecting his bad health

  3. remember that the place they are in is a catacomb and it is encrusted with lots of nitre... if you check with your chem teacher, you will be informed that nitre is used as a preservative (to keep fresh meat from spoiling) and it is an oxide of nitrogen.  once one inhales the fumes of this, you will most likely have problems with your lungs (prolonged inhalation will eventually cause bronchitis, pneumonia or even cancer)  and any oxide of nitrogen when mixed with water will yield acidic compound (like: NO3 +H2O)  and remember that the lungs contains lots of water...  so that is the reason why he was really coughing.

  4. Fortunato's cough get worse as they go through the catacombs because of lack of air. The farther you go beneath the ground, the less air you can breathe.

Amontillado is a very tasty wine that Fortunato is really dying to drink during the carnival season. The carnival season in Spain is celebrated with a public festival such as Mardi Gras. During the season, wines are very rare. So when Montressor fooled him about going down the catacombs for a "cask of Amontillado", he couldn't resist. The wine that Montressor gave him as they went through the catacombs is intended to make him "tipsy" so that he won't mind Montressor's deadly plan.
