The native language in Brazil is Portuguese, however many people do speak some English.  The younger people will speak more fluently.  If you plan to go to Brazil I would suggest that you try to learn at least a few basic phrases in their language.

As you might know, the official language is Portuguese (the only country in South America, as all the others speak Spanish) but English is mandatory in the schools (at least 3 years), so well educated Brazilians have at least an idea of English. Please note that lot's of people are an-alphabet and don't even speak Portuguese properly. However, if you are in the big cities like Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro you will find a lot of business people who speak English fluently. Good luck.

English is taught in the schools, but very few speak it well.  My experience was that in the international service industries (hotels, transportation, etc.) you could find folks who spoke English.  But the majority of people may know some words and phrases, but seldom enough to carry on a conversation.  However, most were very friendly and helpful and I tried speaking Portuguese with them.
