WHIP = Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched.

5 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings would be (5+3)/6 = 8/6 = 1.33.

For example if you give up 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings pitched than u would do this

7 (hits) + 2 (walks) = 9

9 (combined hits and walks) / 9 (total number of innings pitched = 1.00

Walks Plus Hits per Inning (WHIP)

Divide the total number of hits and bases on balls (walks) allowed by the pitcher by his total number of innings pitched. For example, if Jason Schmidt allows 138 hits and 61 bases on balls in 150 innings, his ratio is 1.33 ((138+61)/150).

It's an indicator of how many baserunners a pitcher allows on average each inning, which of course will relate to how many runs a pitcher allows. A WHIP below 1.0 is considered extremely good, above 1.5 it's not so good.
