  1. The Navy.

  2. They were Navy. Attached to NCDU Naval Combat Demolition Unit.

  3. i can only answer for the british frogmen of WW2 as i have no knowledge of the american input on this subject, the royal marines provided the frogmen during WW2,they formed at Eastern barracks in portsmouth,UK which at that time was the home of the royal marines and the EXPERIMENTAL SUBMARINE FLOTILLA which was the name given to this unit in april 1942,in june of the same year the unit moved to scotland and following training commenced operations against german battleships, following WW2 and many years later this unit became the SBS.it is worth noting that the first 2 man submarines were used by the italians but were unsuccessful,

  4. Remember, there were some OSS trained in diving too.

  5. They were the NCDU and UDT teams, later on in Korea they were just the UDT's and then in 1962 the SEAL Teams were formed and then in the 80's all the UDT's were decommissioned and turned into SEAL Teams. During the whole time the Navy owned all of those units with the exception of the USMC Scouts and Raiders, another group the SEAL Teams based themselves on in the early days, they did do some water/dive ops in WWII but they were disbanded post War.
