Increasing investment costs?

Companies often have to increase their investment costs to obtain real options. Why

might this be so, and how could a firm decide if it was worth the cost to obtain a given

real option?

Options are neat, today I had the option of pooping in the toilet or on the floor. However, my dogs took care of pooping on the floor so I chose the option of pooping in the toilet. My firm advised me to do so.
