The industrial revolution, so called, was a mixed blessing, at best.  It provided goods more cheaply but at a high cost, spiritually and psychologically, still being reckoned around the planet.

While not exactly equal in horror, perhaps, just call to mind the sweatshops run by western industry in Indonesia, mexico, and the slave labor of China.  Not something most of us would care to do. Needless to say women were not treated well by the psychopaths who ran the operations.
