  1. One of my coaches didn't start playing until he was 15 years old and ended up as the number 1 player in the U.S. in the Boy's 18s. With that said, he practiced daily 6 hours a day everyday, and it was all blood, sweat and tears. So first, you need to find out what ranking you have in the U.S. based on your results in tournaments. If you haven't started yet, then there is almost no way you will be recruited, unless you walk-on to a college to play in front of the coach, which you are allowed to do 5 times. You should be at least in the top 1200 if you DO play tournaments to get into a college tennis team. As for how colleges structure their tryouts, most of their team is recruited as the coach takes the initiative to find out about the player. Otherwise, you must walk-on, like I mentioned above. As for things you should be able to do, it's everything. If you've ever seen a good college player play, they hit with great pace, spin, direction and their volleys are all solid as well as their footwork. Their first serves are 100mph+ and their second serves all spin a great amount, say, over your head if you didn't hit the ball early. So, unless you played like, 10 hours a day in your year of playing, you most likely won't make it. Unfortunately, tennis is like that, just talent alone won't make you great, you have to have enough hours logged in. Nonetheless, best of luck to you.
