Info about medical billing and coding??

I would like only those who are working in this field to answer this....I am intersested in medical billing and coding and I am wondering what your opinion is on this career...how much do you make, how schooling is, etc...any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

  1. Medical billing and medical coding are two different things.

    Medical billing is usually more lenient as far as not requiring a college degree at all. As far as coding, it's usually best to have an associate's degree from an accredited community college. There's a list of choices at www.ahima.org. Most places require the RHIT certification.

    Starting out, most coders in my area make around $12-$14/hour, if they are credentialed. Schooling isn't too hard if you put your mind to it!

I am taking a medical coding/billing course through Penn Foster, online.  I have looked into it, and some coders/billers start out at $35,000/yr.  The school work is basically easy.  I think it is a good choice for a career. Also, my mom has been doing this type work for 36 years, and she makes a good living.
