Question:

Installation problem with burner...?

I tried replacing my current DVD burner with a used CD(so I have no specific installation software) one and get all kinds of error messages and my computer won't reboot with it. I put the old one back in, got all kinds of error messages again, but eventually got things corrected.

I'm no expert at this stuff but now I'm afraid to switch burners...any tips on how to do this? (Have Windows XP if that means anything).

  1. You didn't say why you were replacing a DvD burner with a CD?

That appears to be a downgrade.

But for whatever reason, you have to have the selector jumper set to whatever the old drive is set for i.e. Master-Slave or Cable select.

I've also seen a simple cleaning with a wet cleaner do magic on drives.

You can get one at any dollar store for a buck.

Then there is the option of getting a firmware update from the DvD burner's manufacturer's web site for the model in question to flash the drive.

Also some computers will not recognize a new drive untill you enter the BIOS setting and do a "Save and Exit"

I hope one of these solutions works before you downgrade to the standard CD.
