  1. It can be difficult to come up with a topic - but it should be something YOU are interested in.  It will make it more interesting that way.  I've included a web site below - it is a high school (in MA) site that I use with my honors students (we don't go to the school).  The site leads the user through a step-by-step process to select a topic, create a thesis and much more.  Check it out - it could help. Good luck!

  2. I just had a class in which the topic of our research paper was debating the subject of separating gender in the classroom. Pros, cons, comparing it to separation of race and the rulings of Brown v. Board of Education, discussing differences in gender (aggressiveness of boys vs. girls, strengths in various subjects, sexual tensions), etc. It seemed to raise a lot of debate an produce interesting papers.

  3. It would be interesting if you write about the dialect regional differences in English. You can select specific regions in which they have a certain "dialect", variations of the "traditional English"  that represents them and capture how they say certain words differently. You can compare and contrast and come up with reasons why these differences arise. Your main thesis would be reinforce with evidence how a language can vary according to the different regions people live.  So, depending on the region, is depending what "type" of English they will speak. For example, there are regions of New Brunswick, where you see Mexican or Latin people, where they pronounce the "th" as a "d"; there are also regions from New York, where we see many African Americans, where they do a lot of dropping the g sound in words like "working"; they would say "workin".

It seems like a difficult topic but it would certainly impress your professor.
