Internet is slow?

Question

I have 8mb internet serviece and it seems recently the internet is very slow. I have run antispyware and Mcafe virus software and it didn't detect anything. I run the internet through a router that I bought about 5 years ago. Why is it slow......it should be very fast with that speed internet? Do I need a new router????

A new router is not likely the solution.  If it was fast in the past and it seems slow now it is not likely the router.

The real question is how do you know it is slow?  Did you run a speed test, and if so, what were the results.  Download servers run at different speeds and are not a measure of speed; download servers also allocate bandwidth based upon number of users - so this varies throughout the day.

The internet speed is divided equally among all LAN users; if 5 people are all downloading a large file, the speed seen be each is 1/5 of the full speed.  

If you have a wireless access point, it may well be freeloaders are hacking in and stealing capacity; invoke security.

Run a speed check with no one else on, wireless disconnected, and a single wired pc connected.  This will tell you a lot.

Finally an 8 Mb service is an "up to 8 Mb" service.  All CATV services are subject to variations in speed and a speed of 6 Mb at some times is not out of order.  Remember that 8 Mbps is 1 MBps as well.

The cache on the router may either need to be cleared, or just get a new router. Even with "fast internet" if you have a crappy modem/router it doesn't help you out in that case. Get the router from Bestbuy, then hook it up, run all the spyware programs again disconnected from the internet. Connect the new router, go to speakeasy.net and check your speed, if it didn't help, then either it is your computer, or the line coming in. I know with my cable modem, once in a while my account was put on a "supervision" or such status that limited my speed due to "overuse for home service" ?? Not sure either....   Personally think Mcafe slows down computers and is overrated.... Good Luck & Have Fun :-) !

No, it is not that you need a new router. click start. then click programs. then go to accessories. then find disk defragmentation. then defragment your computer. also if you have limewire or itunes it also may slow it down.

Download and run spybot and superantivirus

Defrag the HDD

Delete any programs you seldom or no longer use

It can also be the service; if you're on cable and everyone in your neighborhood with cable is using the net -DOWNLOADING- at the same time, it's possible that your neighbors are slowing down your connection with congestion. Then again, it shouldn't make that much of a difference in this day and age due to technological advances. Even so, contact your ISP for any support issues. It may be temporary issues on their end.
