Iphone query - UK to New Zealand?

Can you buy an iphone in the UK and then take it back/use it overseas (specifically New Zealand)? Is there such a thing as a pre-pay iphone which could be swapped with a NZ Sim card?

If you want to use all the features of the iphone then you need to sign a contract in NZ. You can use an overseas iphone (i assume you need to unlock it like a normal phone?).

However, if you wanted to simply use your iphone as a regular old GSM cell phone, without all its iphone type features then that is possible on  prepay in NZ (as far as I know).
