Ipod troubles!!!***?

Question

ok so long story short, i lost my ipod, friend gave me her old one, cause they r the exact same. she had songs on there that i want to keep but if i plug it into my computer and officially making it mine, by doing the whole resetting thing (how do u do btw) willl i lose all the songs? anything is helpful!
