Question:

Ireland, Dublin and walking?

A few of my mates, as a belated birthday present for me, have booked flights, accommodation and car hire for us to go to Dublin for a couple of days next week. We intend to drive south out of Dublin and go walking in the hills for a day, can anyone recommend the most scenic walks around there? It has to involve walking a mountain; we're all fit and healthy enough to walk up ones as big as any in England, so just wondering which would be best...?

  1. Have a look at this site and there are many others on google...

Have a great time here in Ireland - hope the weather will be good.

  2. i dont do walking in dublin,, just staggering

  3. Hey. Yes I know south Dublin very well. Its beside Wicklow which is called the garden of Ireland. If you are staying in Dublin you can get a bus from the busarus depot to Wicklow. Its the central bus station and go to the sugar loaf mountain. Its a nice mountain to climb, not huge but very beautiful. If you time it well you can leave Dublin at around 11am and return about 4pm. Bring lunch. Ask the driver to let you out and Glen of the Downs near the Glenview hotel. This road will bring you to the mountain. Later enjoy a pint at the Glen view. Bring your camcorder. Its exciting and fun. Also if you have time visit Powerscourt gardens and waterfalls. If somebody drives rent a car and its not far from the sugar loaf. Its the ancient home of the fifth Earl of Powerscourt. Women love it so do I coz I love amazing sites and gardens.

  4. There's also other lovely places to walk that don't involve mountains. Try glendalough in wicklow, that is surrounded by mountains, lakes and forests. Killiney hill is also great, it was brilliant views of all of Dublin.

  5. You can drive south and turn off at Kilmacanogue (pronounced locally as kilmacannick) and head into the hills that way.  Laragh is a starting point for many walks.

If you head to Glendalough you can do several walks including one known as the Spink which has great views of the lakes.

Also consider Lughnacuillagh, Scar or Maulin.

Log onto www.coillteoutdoors.ie for information on walking and trails all over Ireland.  Coillte is the forestry organisation for Ireland.

  6. If you're staying in Dublin, don't bother with hiring a car - you'll need the money for food anyway, what with the cost of eating out in the city centre (fecking scandalous. The food is good, but honestly, it's not THAT good. But I digress ....). Instead take the DART or Dublin Area Rapid Transit train from any of the city centre stops and head out to Bray, County Wicklow (south of Dublin), and from there you can get off the DART, head out of the station and simply head up the hill and into the mountains from there.

Parking in Dublin is something of a spectator sport - leave a car anywhere for five minutes and wham, you're clamped. And they are extortionate! No seriously, don't bother with a car in Dublin, it's just not worth the hassle. I live in the West of Ireland and have to drive everywhere because there is very little in the way of public transport over here, but at least in Dublin there is more of a choice. And you CAN save a lot of money by not hiring a car (not just in car hire, but also insurance, parking, fines, and getting the clamps taken off).

Have a nice time in Dublin!
