Is AP Spanish very difficult?

Question

I've done three years of spanish, but I still am bad at it. It honestly is not my fault because I had teachers that weren't interested in teaching. If I work hard enough at it, can I do well in AP Spanish?

Can you tell me about your experience in that class?

I liked AP Spanish. I failed the exam, but I got an A- both semesters. =D

I got an A first semester, A+ second semester and I passed the test. Honestly if you just try to study the whole year through and not wait until the week before you'll be fine. Spanish is one of those classes where the knowledge you gain is applied daily. With classes like history or science or math, you learn a concept and move on.... leaving you to forget what you've learned. Just stick it out for a month or two and then switch out if you can't handle it.

ive been in your same shoes. the thing about learning anything basically is you have to have a good teacher. usually you can figure things out in other subjects but when learning a foreign language without a good teacher you are just so in the dark. if you have had the three classes you should do fine though. just practice speaking spanish alot

Although many times underestimated, Spanish is a difficult language. I'm fluent in spanish, born in Cuba and came to the US about 13 years ago. I took AP spanish in High School and even for me it was a bit of a challenge! I agree that the underlying problem to learning is the quality of teaching, so if the teacher is mediocre and you don't have a lot of background knowledge of the subject chances are you wont do as well. BUT considering that you have done 3 years of spanish (which shows your dedication) and if you're willing to input a lot of effort I think you can do it!

The class goes more into detail as far as rules in grammar and accents. I can't remember much of it now because this was years ago, but I recommend that you take it! Also I remember the test had a spoken portion which tests you on pronounciation and your speaking abilities.

OVERALL, it was a good experience so I recommend it!

The class itself was not that difficult. It took a lot of work, but with a good teacher you will be fine. Since the class is geared to prepare you for the AP test, it has more of a focus on the skills you'll need for the exam. The AP test is a different story. I took the test 4 years ago, so it may be different now. But the different sections of the test were tough. There was a reading portion, a writing portion, and the part of the test i remember the best was the part where we had to speak into a tape recorder. We had to look at a series of pictures and talk about them for 2 minutes (i think). That part was the hardest for me. I think I got a 3 on the exam, so the university i went to didn't give me any credit for it, but I tested out of the language requirement, which was nice.

I'm a firm believer in learning a language through immersion instead of classrooms so if you have an opportunity to immerse yourself in the language (study abroad, etc) that's the best way to learn a foreign language and it will really stick.
