Question:

Is DATEM unvegan???????

and would i be considered unvegan if i ate it. i mean it doesnt specify whether its vegetable or animal derived, but its the ONLY whole wheat baguette i can find and it has it.

so what is datem and is it vegan?

  1. it's  most certainly not vegan, i'll tell ya that much.

    it's processed chemicals...   most processed elements are derived from animal product and or bi product.


  2. DATEM is short for Di-Acetyl Tartaric (Acid) Ester of Monoglyceride.  It's a dough conditioner (like "mono- and diglycerides," another ambiguous ingredient you often find in bread.)

    DATEM can come from either animal or plant sources.  Some manufacturers will specify when it's plant-based, but most don't label one way or the other.

    The best way to know is to contact the manufacturer and ask.  I know there are some vegans who will overlook ambiguous trace ingredients because they don't feel like buying or not buying those products sends enough of an economic message to the market to be worthwhile.  Personally, I haven't had a hard time finding breads without them, but it's totally up to you whether you're comfortable with it or not.

  3. to me, asking if something is "vegan" would be like asking if this piece of food were poisonous. So, if it isn't vegan, then it's probably a good thing in my opinion.
