Is HD DVD dead soon?

  1. I think it is. With the jump of WB and the "rumored" jump of Paramount, HD-DVD won't have much left to itself to drive the sales. It's a shame too because now I have to return my HD-DVD player in fear of its becoming obsolete.

  2. It really is too early to tell. WB committed to BluRay exclusively last week, and Sony (of course, since they developed BluRay), Dsiney, and others are backing Blu Ray, meaning that soon over half of all new releases will be released in BluRay exclusively.  However, there are a few film companies in deals to release HD DVD's for some time, including some big names like DreamWorks. That being said, BluRay has the upper hand at the moment, and it seems that things are going Sony's way. Blockbuster stated earlier this year that their customers request BluRay over HD DVD at almost 3 to 1. Remember, while electronics consumers have been reluctant to go out and buy (i.e. commit to) a  BluRay or HD DVD player, everyone who bought a PS3 was also buying a BluRay player, so that may be what is driving the demand for BluRay disks.

  3. not soon.  paramount still fully sponsors it

  4. It looks to be that way.  I am bummed because I was going to buy the HD-DVD add on for my xbox360.  When Paramount jumps ship, Blu-ray should have a huge promotion with cheap players and 5 free movies to jumpstart the movement.

  5. HD-DVD is DOA for all intents and purposes.  Universal and Paramount are currently in discussions with BDA and I'll be surprised if they don't announce support for BR very soon.  No one wants the format rift to continue any longer, nor can the industry survive the current confusion in the market.  They've basically made the decision for BR and now it's a matter of legalities and finalizing announcements and deals.  Paramount has an out in their HD-DVD contract that was contingent on Warner going with BR.  They also have a ready supply of BR movies not shipped from before they went HDDVD exclusively last July.

  6. Warners Blu-ray decision makes HD DVD success highly doubtful but It's probably too early to immediately call it a 100% win for Blu-ray. HD DVD will struggle to survive without the support of Warner at least for now. Toshiba’s HD DVD has suffered a major setback with Warner's defection, and there is much speculation as to what Toshibas next move will be. Toshiba must now be kicking themselves regarding the decision not to incorporate an HD DVD into the Xbox 360. Bottom line is will they throw in more money and try to win back the studios?  Most probably not. Blu-Ray is way out in front at this point.

  7. alot of companys are switching to bluray so hddvd is probably finished soon
