ok well my grandpa GREW up with horses..he would tame them and brake them into ridding ..he was one of the best of his age.. and right now im interested in a quarter horse palomino that is 2yrs 3 months.. but he is not gelded..

and my grandpa says that right now (summer) your not supposed to geld any horses..because they cdie... he says that the best time is when winter is just starting is this true??

Yes it is true, and since your grandfather grew up around horses then there is no reason you shouldn't believe him.

It's because everything concerning their bodies is more active during the summer months. Gelding them during it will place too much of a strain on them. During the winter months their bodies are more in a state of being idle, so they are less likely to do themselves harm recovering from such a procedure.

you should always listein to your grandfather my great grandfather was a genuine cowboy on the range in new mexico before he died i always listeined to what he said and what to do and everything turned out perfect. trust me listein to the one who knows what hes doing

Could be. In the summer there are more flies which could open the wound and infect it.

Yes, he's correct. Not that you "can't" geld a horse in summer but it's generally a better idea to do it in cooler weather.

In cooler weather there is less bleeding involved, less chance of an infection and less flies around to cause problems----not like it's since there is an incision involved you have tyo be careful with the use of fly sprays around it until it heals.

Also it's usually standard to exercise them at least 10 minutes twice per day at a trot to keep down excess swelling. In hot weather this in itself can cause problems with bleeding ect due to the horses blood supply moving faster to cool it down, but if it's not done excess swelling can occur.
