  1. NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Sorry but no.  Durban is a far safer bet than most of South Africa, but I am by NO MEANS saying it IS safe.  If you want Africa, rather fly to Jhb (cause you have no choice) and fly to Botswana.  But watch out at the airports.  Oh, and make sure your bags are locked, not that it helps but (South African saying here) "it is a deterant".

If you HAVE to go to Jhb, stay in a VERY upmarket area or far out of Jhb and keep your eyes peeled.  Don't show your money off and don't register it anywhere.  Don't trust the police and don't trust our Revenue Service (customs officials).  DON'T use public transportation.  Get your accommodation to meet you at the airport to drive you.  Don't trust anyone, that applies to children too.  This is Africa, they're used to being ignored so don't feel bad.  Don't feel bad not to tip people R50 that carried your bag, R5 is more than enough... actually, don't let people carry your bags.

  3. No way.

  4. Johannesburg is much like a war zone receiving a constant barrage of crime which the police or rather the government is incapable of handling.

Obviously some areas are safer than others but personally I wouldn´t go anywhere near Johannesburg without anything short of a swat team.

But it all depends on how safe you want to be...

  5. Jo'burgers would tell you yes it is safe for tourists but I've met too many people who've been robbed or hijacked whilst living there or on holiday there I would recommend it be avoided or used as a airport stop only.  True there are some beautiful sights out of the city but the city itself is just another city, nothing spectacular in the least - I would rather say opt for Cape Town instead - it is one of the most stunning cities in the world and far safer than Johannesburg.

  6. Yes it has high crime, but unless you do anything stupid you'll be fine, remember it is still the financial capital of South Africa and many top CEO's and important people live around there safely.

  7. I grew up in Cape Town and now live in LA and i think South Sfrica in general is not safe for tourist unless they are with a tour group or friends or relatives. There is so much crime and you really need to know where not too go and you need to be aware of your surroundings every second. Tourist also unfortunately stick out and become targets of crime

  8. Ok, I'm guessing everyone that answered this question doesn't live in Joburg or watches the news too much! Joburg is a great place, just don't go into town!!!! There is alot to do and generally the people are nice to tourists! Great places in Joburg; Fourways, there is a great casino, and great hang out spots; Melrose Arch, Sandton!

  9. Its generally not safe for anyone...depending in the ares ur at.

  10. If you are street wise enough to walk through, london, new york and los angeles then your street smart enough to be fine in joburg

  11. No.It might look safe but don't go thinking you'll be safe. There are other places in South Africa which are safer! Check out them instead ;)
