I think it used to be, but that was a long time ago.  If I remember what I was taught in High School right, the world was one big land mass, and the continents drifted apart. Mexico used to connect to either Spain or Africa, I don't really recall anymore.

So, if your grandmother remembers that time, just how old IS she?

The fact is that Mexico is part of North America which is the northern continent of the Western Hemisphere.  North America extends northward from the Colombia-Panama border and includes Central America, Mexico, the islands of the Caribbean Sea, the United States, Canada, the Arctic Archipelago, and Greenland.  There ya go'!
