  1. It is very nice.

From the nearly-subtropics in the North to the rugged mountains in the south, it offers a wide variety of

    topography and climate.

There is a lot of available outdoor activity, perhaps more so on the South Island.

It is very uncrowded (there are about 10x as many sheep as people) and hence (so far) relatively unspoiled.

I only did a standard tourist romp through both islands,

but it certainly seemed like a nice place to live, too.

I cannot attest to the quality of the universities, but

I'm sure they are all right.

  2. I studied abroad in New Zealand for 6 months last year during their fall and winter. It was amazing. Its a little expensive for international students to study in NZ, but i loved every minute of it, though they do schooling a bit differently than here in the US (fewer tests and papers, hand out notes instead of taking your own, etc). As for sports, most of the universities have clubs which sponsor trips. I joined the tramping (hiking) club at the University of Canterbury and went on their organized hikes. I also had a friend who was in the kayak club and they also did some really cool (and affordable) trips.
