Is camping fun or h**l?

Question

I am taking my two children for the first time, what should i take?

the way i camp its both because h**l isfun, buti go camping with a knife first aid kit and flint and steel thats it. But if you take ur kids you should bring enoug gear so that they can stay comfy cause ther eaint nothing worse than whiny kids whil ur trying to camp

I think it's fun, but my kids sure can make it difficult.  My 4yo loves going on hikes, swimming, roasting marshmallows...  everything is a blast for her.  My 21 mos old on the other hand... he has more fun jumping on the tent while I'm trying to put it up, throwing thing in the fire, trying to run away from the campsite...  He makes it stressful.

We take some outdoor toys (balls, frisbees, etc.), some books and a few indoor toys (in case it rains), and our essential camp gear.  I don't like to take a lot of stuff because even though we have an SUV it fills up pretty quickly.  

The best advice I can give though is ease them into it.  Even though my oldest wanted to go camping and really loves being outdoors I wasn't sure how they would take it.  We started off pitching the tent in the house, letting them sleep in sleeping bags, etc, and then taking them out for overnight trips so they'd get the hang of it.

Have you considered where you're going or how long you plan to stay out? Are you going to overnight, day hike? Maybe try hiking out somewhere more remote(with a group if you have no experience!) or park and camp in a nearby park?

Take along your credit card so if it is h**l, you can have a good laugh and head for the nearest motel. It will be memorable either way. Don't forget the bug spray either.
