Is data loss increasing?

I've noticed that recently a lot of optical storage media containing important information has been lost, like that time when a CD was lost with many people's bank details on.

Did this sort of thing happen in the past as frequently as it happens now? It seems like digital storage mediums are getting so compact that we easily lose them, and this is scary when government storage items get lost, containing very specific information about people.

I think the media have picked up on it recently, it probably went on but no one knew.

Yes!It has always gone on!But it is only recently the media have thought it worth reporting!
