  1. It depends on what you mean by "alive." Or by "dirt."

Soil, while not a life force itself, has many small organisms in it, like bacteria, fungus, nematodes, etc.

House dust, also not a living organism per se,  has living dust mites in it , as well as the bacteria, fungus, etc. stuff. They live off your dead skin cells.

  2. no

  3. No the difference between living and non-living things are cells. Dirt does not have cells therefore it is not a living organsm :)

  4. Also depends on what type of "dirt" you are talking about. Topsoil is decomposed organic matter that was once "Living". Whereas the subsoil is inorganic material such as rocks, and other minerals (clay, iron, etc).

So to answer your question, dirt is not CURRENTLY living, it is just made up of decomposed material that was ONCE living.

    Hope this helps.

  5. No. not in the sense that it is a tree or a skunk. It can contain living organisms and microbes, as well as formerly living things.
