i am mexican and my sons father is Filipino Mexican born here in the united states, if you were to see him you would think he is full blooded filipino. any how, my question is, is it possible for a babys' first language to be filipino although the father is not around? i ask because my son is starting to mumble a lot of words, and usually, i assume, should be understood, right? meaning it supposed to be either english or spanish because they are primary languages at home. but my son mumbles i can't understand but when he does it i can tell he is saying a word. maybe i'm just being a weirdo but i need to know..

  1. The baby has to pick it up from somewhere.  Unless yo'ure speaking filipino, the baby is not speaking that.  Could be a mixture of spanish and english and it's little baby brain is mixing up the two languages from hearing them both on a daily basis.  Good luck to your bilingual baby!

  2. im pretty sure the baby wouldn't be speaking a language that he's never heard. it's not in your blood or anything...

  3. Languages have to be taught to a child. They pick them up quicker the earlier they are taught but they are not born with a knowledge of a language. It is probably just mumbling. Kids kinda make up there own stuff as they go along, putting sounds together and stuff.

  4. Babies can't just be born a language they have to be taught it. He's probably just doing his best to imitate sounds he's heard other people say.

  5. Children learn by listening. If he hasn't heard someone speaking in that language he wouldn't be able to speak it.

  6. Language is learned.  If nobody speaks filipino in the home, he won't learn it.

  7. his first launguage can be filipino...but that's only if u and/or someone else talk to him in filipino and only in filipino.

For example I'm black and so is my sister and she married a man from Dominican Republic...and she speaks to her son in English while the father speaks to him in Spanish...therefore my nephew is now bilingual and will understand if I tell him something in wither English or in Spanish. :P

  8. children learn language from hearing and reading it, if hes not exposed to the language he wont learn it. its prob just baby babble!

  9. Only if he hears the language it's not like we are born to know Spanish, French, German, English, Asian etc..... just because they are of that descent doesn't mean they automatically know that language....it would be nice being I am Spanish American yet I am not fluent in Spanish ....how old is your son? you didn't mention that and babies until old enough to really talk mumble words no one can understand....so relax and give him time to be able to really pronounce words and he will be fine.
