  1. They just don't want you to join. Everyone is usually treated the same. There are some people who are against Females in the Marines. But it doesn't matter. Your parents are just trying to scare you.

  2. To be honest.....women do not get treated "fairly' anywhere..... Your parents attempt to shield you , while loving, does not prepare you for the real world. The military is like anyplace else in society..... you must fight for respect and not tolerate abuse. Most troops will treat you right but there will always be a few.....you need to learn to handle these neanderthals and make your way in the world. Borrow from the BSA.... "Be Prepared".....

You have four or five years.....do not get in a rush.....Work on preparing yourself mentally ( get a good education....never stop).....get in top physical condition.......take martial arts......

I do not know if The Marines are the career for you.....but do your homework......talk to several female Marines.....get their views and experiences.... do the research

There are lots of horror stories.....everyone likes to talk about the bad stuff.....

When I told my family I was moving to the Philippines they ALL said I would be murdered.....I would be the victim of Abu Syiff terrorists.... I have lived here 5 years.....never been happier.....

Your family has heard about rapes and other ugly stories..... and sadly some of those stories are true......but they are no more frequent in the military than anywhere else.... the military in a reflection of our society.....you have "animals" in the local Mall......you have "animals" in the military.....but regardless where you encounter them YOU must learn to deal with them

Once you earn the respect of your fellow Marines.....you will be surprised how many will come to your side and protect you....you may be a woman.....but you are also a MARINE..... one of the few

  3. I'm going through the exact same thing. I'm 17 and have a deep love for the Marine Corps. My parents refuse to sign the papers and they're trying everything to keep me from going. The guilt trip, "It's not for you", "You can't handle it" Girls are treated fairly in the military. They're treated worse in society. I PT with the Navy every month because the Marines won't allow me to because they can't have guests. Navy Deppers can and I can literally do more pushups than more then half of the guys in there. It seems to me, that you have the heart of a Marine. I always take the hard way and I know I can accomplish it. You're going to be doing what most people fear. That's courage. Good luck

  4. Your parents are morons.

How you are treated depends on you.  If you're a good Marine, you'll be treated well.  If you suck as a Marine, your treatment won't be so good.  The bottom line is it's all up to you.

If your parents won't sign at 17, wait until you turn 18 & then send them a letter from boot camp.

    Good luck.

  5. My name is spelled Meghan too :-P

The military is FAIR. They treat everyone properly. The marines is a hard core unit, assure you are mentally prepared for this. You can join at 18 without the need for your parents consent.

  6. It's a load of bull.

  7. Couldn't you just wait until you're 18 and sign for yourself?

You parents probably just don't want you to go into the military because, as parents, they worry about you. They might actually believe that the marine corps treat women poorly or maybe they're just afraid that you'll get shot. From my experience I can tell you that sexism in the military is a thing of the past.

Whether you join up or not is your decision, though, not theirs. How do they feel about letting you try ROTC?

  8. The Marines, let alone any branch, basically abides by the golden rule. If you do your job and treat everyone with respect, then people will treat you right.

When you get to high school, I'd advise doing JROTC, if your high school offers it. If you don't know what that is, it's basically a 3 or 4 year program that allows you to enter the military at a higher rank. I'm in it right now, and it is simply an awesome experience.
