I'm 15 turning 16 in Sept. I want to start training in Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. I'm a well rounded athlete I've wrestled for two years, ran track for 4, and played football for 6. Now I want to something different. I'm 5'5 150 pounds I bench press 205 pounds and squat 295. So can I still be a successful martial artist

  1. Take Grappling instead. You may make something out of yourself with that wrestling experience.

  2. Kung Fu, as far as I know, is mostly just about flash these days. Also, it doesn't matter how much you can bench or squat in martial arts. Try something like BJJ it's a pretty good martial art. It'll give you something easy to start off on as a base.

  3. what your mind can conceive, your body can achieve.. there's nothing wrong in trying..

  4. It is never too late to start learning what you could have before. Don't worry; you sound like you're in good shape. If it helps: I was a couch potato, and voila! I'm a student in kung fu! It doesn't matter about age. It's never too late; never say never!

  5. Nah its not to late thats when i started and im just fine, im just about the youngest in my class, and us eem to be in good shape and ur have a good excersize background, go for it, u can do it

  6. Hello there !

Questions such as this makes me feel really antiquated ~laugh~

Provided that you do not have pre-existing physical condition such joint or back problems that would perhaps hinder your ability to practice and train. Then the answer is  No its never too late to start training !.

Believe it or not , age matters not in the martial arts.  In Okinawa as well as other cultures, there are practitioners who are still training over the age of 80 years and beyond.

Getting involved in the martial arts at your age or even older, is one way to keep yourself in shape and who knows , might even slow down your aging process. ~smile~

You have the choice to train as mild or agressive as you like. As long as your are training , you will be doing just great.  Training is better than no training at all !  Perhaps you may even learn skills that can save your life as well or the lives of someone else. You know what else ? You may even have a great time doing it !

Bottom line, start training now and don't look back, and soon you will aquire what ever it is that you desire !
