people with a prescription of minus 5 are in greater risk for retinal detachment is this probably a myth?

  1. How come ophthalmic "techs" and opticians answer these questions when they have no credentials?


  2. Yes, very myopic people (nearsighted) have a long eye, which means that their eye is more egg shaped, leading to a greater risk of suffering a retinal detachment.

    But that risk factor is largely for people near their 70's.

  3. The term is nearSIGHTED...not sided...so many people say that.

    High myopia ( nearsightedness) does create a very real and increased risk....not so much at - 5.00...but once it reaches into the - 8.00 region, it is much more of a concern.
