  1. Liverpool is the nearest city to Dublin being only 50 miles away as the crow flies. However it is in England, in the county of Lancashire.  People often joke about it being the capital of Ireland because of the huge proportion of its residents who have Irish ancestry. It was the nearest ferry port to Ireland and was the fist stop for many millions of people who emigrated from Ireland looking for work during the famine and other bad times.
