I bought a common pleco, about 4 inches long, and have had it for about 5 months now and still is the same size. He stays with a 6 inch red oscar and a 4 inch tiger oscar.

  1. Make sure it's getting enough to eat with the cichlids in the tank.

You can feed it big chunks of vege, weighed down with a fork. Leave it in overnight and take out the leftovers in the morning. Doesn't matter if the Oscars eat some too.

Also not all 'Common' plecos are even the same species, so some seem to grow much faster and bigger than others.

  2. We had a little 3" Pleco & it stayed about the same size for months & then he started to grow & now he's a little over a foot long (its taken about a year). Fortunatly he seems to have stopped growing again for now. :)

Ours is in a 155 gallon tank, so he had a lot of room to grow.

  3. common plecos are very slow growers, but once they start growing there is no stopping them

especially if they have the right sized tank to be in

they can get to be over a foot long, so make sure you have the right sized tank

  4. plecos grow up to a foot in length but they are very slow growing fish. in order to get that large you will need to have it for a long time . many many years
