Is my hermit crab??

Question

I got 2 hermit crabs yesterday at the beach and we have been playing with them for a while.I'm at home and about 10 minutes ago i picked one up and shook it a tiny bit and its pincher fell off. It hadn't been moving a lot though. Will it be OK ?

First of all I would not suggest shaking it O.o second, you probably shouldn't take animals you find outside home. They're used to being outside and providing for themselves, and if you take them away from their natural enviroment, their very prone to dying.

pet hermit crabs are diffrent from the ones at the beach they will die if you dont bring them back to the beach!!

Don't keep hermit crabs from the beach! They are different than the ones fom the pet store. Take them back or they will surely die!

If it was just a leg that fell off he will be fine, pincers i'm not sure about. Hermit crabs are able to regenerate most of their limbs when molting. Gently shaking the hermit crab wouldn't cause its pincer to fall off, an injury would. Keep an eye on it and make sure the other crab isn't picking on it too much. Make sure the humidity in the tank is decent and the temperature is right or he may get really stressed out and having a new home is stressful enough. Try to refrain from playing with your new pet too much as it will stress him/ her out even more.

In the future, to get your crab to come out of its shell there are other things you can try. Gently blowing on the limbs will sometimes coax it out. placing it in its water dish is also effective.
