Question:

Is my network adapter dead?

Ok, I've been frustrated all day today and yesterday with my computer. I can't connect to the internet on my desktop computer.

I have checked my device manager and it's not under there.

I've checked my modem, it's working. In fact, I'm using it with my laptop right now.

I'm 100% sure my computer comes with a network adapter because I was able to connect to the web before.

So is my network adapter dead? and if so, how do i fix it?

  1. In the course of all you did, those hardware periphials, and drivers now need reinstalling.

    You want to remove them.

    Restart

    Shut down

    Install them physically

    Restart.

Then XP will see them as new hardware, and install the new drivers...and you'll be good to go.

If then it isn't working, in Device Manager >

    ENable.

If still not working, it may be dead...try it out in another computer.  That will tell the tale.

  2. First of all it looks like it's a motherboard driver problem with you Network Card, Video and Audio.  So if it's a Dell computer you can type in your service tag to find out your motherboard and the drivers.

If not open up your computer and find out which motherboard you have.  The motherboard model number should be written somewhere on your motherboard normally on the edge of the motherboard.  It should also be the largest characters on the motherboard.  Then go to yahoo and search for the model number and drivers.  Or go to the manufacturer of the motherboard.

I would do this first otherwise you won't get audio, video, network and possible USB 2.0, etc...   Otherwise you can pick up a PCI network card for around USD$20.  But I would leave that to a last resort.

  3. From what you said, it's a software problem for sure.

Dell is notorious for using hardware that XP doesn't have drivers for.  You just need to install the right drivers.

Since you don't have the ResourceCD that came with the computer, you need to download the drivers...and burn them to CD so you can get them onto that computer.  Go to http://support.dell.com and find the driver-download section for that computer (either by ServiceTag or model number).  You can get on your working computer and download the drivers for network, modem, audio, and anything else that has a yellow exclaimation.  Burn these to a CD and install them on your desktop.

When you're done it will be like a brand-new computer (and probably even faster since you didn't install all the crapware computers come)...squeeky clean :)

  4. no your not in a need of a upgrade , your yellow ! simply means you have not installed the required drivers , and the reason why you do not see your nic card is yes you guessed it . the drivers are not installed , use your laptop go to dells website and download the required drivers for your machine
