Question:

Is my parakeet pregnant? or sick?

my parakeet has a weakness in her legs and she has somewhat of a loss of apitite but at the same time eats a little. she is often found clinging on the top corner of the cage. I noticed she has coughed out a couple seeds and she had vomited out seed by seed. I believe I do not have enough money for a vet and am worried if she might die. Do you think my bird is suffering from an illness or is she trying to lay an egg?

  1. well im so sure but i had two parakeets and they wanted to make a nest so we brought them one but them they died.  so maybe it could be pregnant.

  2. She sounds to me like she is suffering from an illness.  True, birds with egg-binding wouldn't eat, but they wouldn't be on the bars of the cage.  Instead, they would be on the ground.

Once a bird gets sick, there's really not much you can do to help it.  Try to give her a bath in lukewarm water (no soap).  This might help wash off any mites or infections that are on her skin or feathers.  Keep her warm; place a heat lamp over her cage at all times to keep her from getting too cold or chilled.

    Best of luck,

P.S.  Do try to bring her to a vet's office, if you get the chance.  Call an avian vet's office to see the prices just for a check-up; sometimes it's as low as 25$!

  3. shes only pregnant if there is a nest in the cage and hangs out in it while the male feeds her

  4. Birds can only be pregnate if there is a bird box in the cage. It would be best if you took her to a bird vet.
