Is pharmacology worth it?

Is pharmacology a good job? The thing is I don't want to get a college degree in this field and end up working in longs.

I was wondering if I could work in a lab researching drugs and pharmaceutical substances and also illegal drugs.

  1. With a PhD degree in pharmacology you qualify for a well-paying job as a pharmacist. Keep in mind that this must be one of the most boring jobs on Earth, as pharmacists basically count pills.

I'm sure there is a demand within the pharmaceutical industry for research pharmacologists. However the real demand is for research physicians in various specialty areas.

To answer your question, I do not think a PhD degree in pharmacology is worth the time, money and effort. If you are interested in drugs and research you'd be far better off with a degree in medicine.

  2. On the contrary to those who posted above, a pharmacologist (PhD) is NOT the same as a pharmacist (PharmD).

A pharmacist went to pharmacy school and earned a PharmD, a professional degree.  They are the ones you see at the drug store or the hospital dispensing medication.

A PhD in pharmacology is a research/academic degree that involved in many things including drug development.  Unless the pharmacologist also has a PharmD, they can't work as a pharmacist, ever.

An advanced degree (master up) in pharmacology offers you a career in new drug development, clinical trials in both academic and private settings.

It can serve as well a launching point into the field of toxicology when you can get involved in medical-legal cases and be an expert witness, drug (legal/illegal) testing as well as environmental studies involving contamination and safety issues.

Many research jobs at lower levels can be 9-5 but as you go higher up, more money, more responsibility, more time.

  3. You can rationalize two or three herbs .That is extraction, spectroscopy, clinical trail, and patenting . This will earn you a good name ,good money and professional satisfaction.

  4. this is the field that i'm considering right now...

from the research i've done, it would be a lot better to get a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or a related science. you can get a basic job in pharmaceutical research with a bachelors if you have several years of lab experience. the amount of lab experience necessary to qualify is less if you have  a masters and can be none if you have a PhD.

also, you can't get a bachelor's degree in pharmacology, but you can get a degree as a doctor of pharmacy; this requires getting into a school of pharmacy (which, i've heard, are more selective than some med schools) and that is the degree necessary to work as an actual pharmacist (as opposed to a pharm tech or any of those other jobs)

therefore, i recommend majoring in a chemistry or biology related field....
