  1. Preschool is definately beneficial but not a requirement.  As others have mentioned that there are many states, if not all of them, where Kindergarten isn't a requirement.  I do NOT recommend this.  :-)

If you are hesitant about sending your child to preschool just work with the child at home.  Beyond basic concepts please allow for playdates, time away from main "caregiver"-which usually is mom, attend play groups and story times to give the child a little socialization :-)

  2. No, it isn't and in many states kindergarten isn't required.  I taught kindergarten for many years and found very little difference between students who had attended pre-k and those who had been at home with a loving parent, or other care giver.

Children can learn the basics of what they need to start school at home.  If you  enroll your child in pre-K that is fine and good, but not required.

  3. it varies from state to state, but in Ohio, you do not need to have your child attend prek

  4. Is Pre-K required for what?  If you are referring to your child attending Pre-K before Kindergarten , I don't think it is a requirement in most states. It's definetly a plus if the preschool is dedicated to educating young children and preparing them for Kindergarten.  I teach Pre-K in NC and by the time my students leave me they are well prepared for the future-knowing alphabets, letter sounds, rhyming words, how to write, how to blend sounds together to read words, counting using one to one correspondence, patterns, solving simple mathematical problems, adding, subtracting, etc.  The list goes on.  The school however, must include structure and a curriculum that the teachers and administration follow.  I'm sending you a link that will hopefully aid you in your search.  I'm all for Pre-K.

  5. In CA- Kindergarden is not even a requirement. Check with http://www.hslda.com for your state's education requirements.

There are so many things you can do with your kids at home. Don't send them off to young to school. They are much better off at home with you, one on one!

  6. PreK by definition is a gvt. sponsored program in public schools.  It is not required and your child must pass certain eligibility requirements to get in.

The requirements are usually either:  1. The child is developmentally delayed in language (primary language other than english or speech delay)

    or

    2.  The family income is under the poverty level.

  7. No, it's not.  And don't listen to the guy who said it's for poverty-stricken disabled kids.  It's not necessarily that either.  My son is in a pre-k program at a private school where they teach them all the things most kids learn in kindergarten or first grade.  But back to your question - no, no one requires pre-k.  But in many cases, I think it is a good idea if you can manage it.  I was very proud of the amount of stuff my son knew before he started, and thought they couldn't possibly do better than I did.  I was wrong.  He's now much better prepared for school than i ever imagined he could be.
