Question:

Is this Fin Rot?

I just got a pink kissing gourami today from petsmart. I put him in my tank and noticed that his top fin and side fin were smaller than my other gourami. His eye is also kind of white and has like a cone shape gel looking thing on it. Could this be fin rot and if so what should I do? Do they make medacine for it?

  1. I would treat with Maracyn + Maracyn 2, as it sounds like the beginnings of fin rot and an eye infection.  The combination will treat a wide range of infections very effectively.  Be sure you remove any acitvated carbon from the fitler during treatment and keep the lights out, as the minocycline in Maracyn 2 degrades with exposure to light.

  2. I'm sorry if this sounds crude, but if you have had your fish for no longer than two weeks then you will be able to return the injured or diseased fish; but if you have had the fish past 2 weeks Petsmart will not longer be at fault for the death of a fish. So in that case the easiest way to treat the problem is by going to your local pet shop and buying an antibiotic medication, I recommend Rid-Ich+ by Kordan. FOLLOW the directions and your gourami will get better. I had the same issue, don't worry about it, just follow the directions

  3. Ha! Your gourami is BADLY damaged and you need to take it back to the store and get a healthy fish! Its eye is burst and blind now. An infection will go straight thru the eye to the brain and kill it. Its fins are damaged too. I would recommend getting a different kind of fish if they are selling a gourami like that! Do not try to do anything with it except to RETURN it to the store for a different fish!
