Is this a garter snake?

Can a garter snake be dark brown/almost black with light brown/tan stripes running down the body?

  1. I believe it's a "Black Rat Snake".  Very populous in the Midwest.

    Nonpoisonous, and helps keep the mice & moles out of your yard.

It does sound like a Garter.  There are different varieties though.  A garter shouldn't be more than 2 feet.  They are very quick snakes and if caught in the wild usually jumpy and try to get away.  They may pee on you as a defense...That stinks very bad.  A wild caught may try to bite you also.  They do have very small teeth,  its more to scare you than anything.   Depending on what part of the country you live in, without a picture, I cannot be 100% sure.  Be careful with all snakes until you are sure what you have.  Don't hold even a gentle snake near your face,  If it does get spooked and decide to strike at you, the last think you want is a bite on your face or eye.   Best thing to do is take it to a pet shop and ask, or someone that would know for sure.  If you have snakes on your property,  it's best to know exactly what they are.
