I'll be flying from San Jose to LAX. Can I bring a small backpack as a carry on?

The airlines actually like it when people bring "soft" bags on board. Meaning the kind you squish or push into just about size space. Unlike those idiotic people who bring huge suitcases on board that are bulky.

Yes.  Make sure you have no liquids in the bag.  Additionally, if you have a laptop - take it out during the security screening.  Laptops are subject to special search.

You're actually allowed one carry on item and one personal item... so fret not about the backpack - as a personal item, you'll have no issues.

Yes, that's fine. You're allowed to bring one medium-sized suitcase (check your bigger ones) and one personal item, i.e. purse, briefcase, or backpack.
