Is this possible engineers?

I have a good idea as to make my own go kart....

I plan to use a mattress and a bedframe as my kart. I heard of some people doing this and I wanted to do it myself. Now I will have some help. My brother has a masters in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelors in Physics. He said it is possible but would be sorta difficult.

The only problem I have is I don't know what kind of engine to use. I just want an engine strong enough to propel one person (preferably 2 people) and for 600-800 dollars.

What would be good? I was thinking a golf cart engine with a car battery but that wouldn't go really fast.

What do you think?

I have an engineering degree also (WPI).  Of course it is possible.  Your brother was being polite when he said "sorta".  Do not waste your time or money.  Find yourself a used cart and start from there.
