Question:

Is water an element(read detail)?

i'm in chemistry right now and i'm a little bit confused. Is water an element even though its made up of two different types of atoms per molecule, or are elements atoms which are only one kind of atom...like hydrogen or oxygen?? Please explain!!!

  1. I had this question for homework, I believe 2 nights ago and I believe it's a compound. It's combined of hydrogen and oxygen.


  2. Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and the Halogens exist as "Diatomic molecules' of the same element as H2, N2, O2, Cl2...etc. They are not compounds.

    Water is a Compound of 2 different elements of Hydrogen and Oxygen, chemically combined to form H2O.

    (2H2 + O2 = 2H2O).

    (This also occurs during the Exothermic combustion reaction of Hydrogen with Oxygen of the air. The water thus formed due to the heat, is in vapour form).

    (In the Middle Ages, The 4 Elements were known as Earth, Air, Fire and Water).
