We get snow, ironically, when heat in bodies of water cause them to be covered with water vapour.

The water vapour gets blown inland and dumps snow on us, meanwhile releasing enormous amounts of heat into the air high above us.

That heat high above us pulls in winds from all directions, but significantly from the north, which means we get polar winds down on us.

Because that air above us is heated, it can rise above the polar cold air and push down on it, sending it out of the polar regions.

As it settles down over polar regions we complete the heat transfer from tropics to poles.
