when are the school holidays in japan?

The next school holidays in Tokyo are Dec 24 to Jan 07.

Kids nationwide are on their summer holidays right now , roughly  

two months long.  It's called natsu yasumi 　なつやすみ　（夏休み)　.

as everyone said...

after the kiddies go back on September 1st (well my kiddy anyway)

there will be a long weekend in September, (sept 15), then October 13th, then Nov 3 and Nov 24, there is also a public holiday on Dec 24....but school doesn`t get out until Dec 27 for the New Year Holiday.

It depends on schools. Basically week-end and National holidays are off. There are also 3 seasonal vacation such as Summer, Winter and Spring.

Summer holidays will end usually at end of August or late August.

The above holiday list says that the next national holiday is the third Monday of September in Japan.

Besides those national holidays, some school may have special holidays like the city's established day or the school established day.
