Question:

Joining the Marines with a GED?

I am a GED holder who would like to join the Marines. However I have heard its NEAR impossible to join with one. But since it is still possible what would it take? I am currently an Eagle scout, and did score in the 99 percentile in all my standardized testing in high school. Could I just score really high on my ASVAB? If so how high? Thanks in advance, I would ask my recruiter but I live in podunk nowhere.

  1. Aside from your GED it sounds like you might have a lot going in your favor. You must score above a 50 on the ASVAB, and need 12 credit hours from an accredited college...it could be in underwater basket weaving for all they care, as long as you have them. If you don't have the college credits, then your recruiter will need to request a waiver for you...and those can be hard to come by as each station is only allocated so many per fiscal year. I would go ahead and talk with a recruiter over the phone if it's too far to drive. He or she can let you know whether there is any space for a GED waiver. Even if the station has maxed, the NCOICs and headquarters can get together and finagle something if they feel you are an excellent prospect.

  2. With a GED there are no guarantees. They do accept some..

What happens is if you score very high on your ASVAB and are willing to take a job that they give you then you are given more consideration then someone who scores low..

GED holders must score higher on their ASVAB to gain entry..and are often used to fill MOS's that are difficult to fill up.

Also, with a GED you better not have any other issues such as legal or medical. You are not in the position to ask or demand anythign with a GED and the USMC is in no way desperate for bodies,so you will be very lucky if you get in.

  3. If you score high on the ASVAB you can get in.   I would write to a recruiter and get the information you need.
