In volleyball, what position is "Opp." and "DS"?

  1. an OPP is the opposite.  An opposite is opposite the setter, (on the court) and plays right side, both front and back (though you could sub out for a right front and a right back, depending on skill level).  They are the right side hitter/blocker when they are in the front row.  If the setter has to pass the first ball, the right side will take the second and set it.

    a DS is a defensive specialist.  The are the best at digging, passing and are usually the Libero.  They play primarily back row (the Libero can ONLY play back row) and usually sub out for a better front row player when they rotate to the front row.

  2. OPP is the player that plays opposite the setter.  They usually switch to right front.  They are the responsible for setting the ball if the setter has to play the first ball.  They are also responsible for blocking the power hitter for the other team.  

    DS is the defensive specialist.  They are for passing and passing and more passing.  They play across the back row by replacing a front row player when they rotate back to the back row.
