I have just started Uni in NZ and have joined the rowing club and the canoe club. I have just found out that they often coincide.

What one should I do?

  1. i'd go with kayaking because then you can paddle long distance (aka boring but similar to rowing). but you can also do freestyle and throw some moves in a playboat, run rivers, ride surf.

check it, our club in uganda http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UQuGZFfi...

  2. This has got to be based on your personality and interests!

Rowing is more disciplined and can be more competitive -  there is more training involved.  Which means it would have you fitter.

Kayakers (especially white water kayakers) are more laid back and usually all about the social side as well as kayaking.  There are a variety of types of kayaking, so you should probably look into that.  If you are a bit of a thrill seeker river running or whitewater kayaking would be perfect for you.  If not maybe sea kayaking or touring could be your thing.  Or have you considered playboating?  Doing tricks and flips and stuff?

These may help a little but if you can try a bit of both - go for it!  Good luck!

or just do a search yourself!

  3. They are both very beneficial physically, but I am partial to Kayaking. I find Kayaking to be much more enjoyable.

  4. from personal experience, i would say that rowing is more benificail. i used to be a rower (but now an a coxswain). When you row, you learn balance, focus, and if you row competetively, then you learn how to push yourself to the physical limit. Kayaking is alright, but nothing to serious. i think taht rowing is more benificail and a whole lot more fun.

  5. rowing is better 4 u

    kayaking is more fun

  6. I used to be both competitive rower and kayaker and done quite some expedition with both as well.

Kayaking in generally limits to 1 or 2 person sports where rowing could be more depends what type of rowing you preferred.

Other user had pointed out the various type of kayaking you could do with canoeing or kayaking, but there is also many stuff people had done on rowing., i.e trans-ocean race and expedition involve in rowing.

I would suggest that you try both sports, and you like them both, maybe you could talk to both senior member of the club and tell them you situation.

  7. Rowing and kayaking can be quite similar. Each can be pursued as a single person sport or a multiperson one. I doubt that anything though is more 'fun' than whitewater kayaking. Please try them all out....then decide what you want to 'major' in.
