My boyfriend's brother just went through a divorce and he has 2 little kids one is 5 and one is 2. He just moved into his apartment and got bunkbeds for his kids. The five year old was super excited for them. His ex-wife just called him and told him it was against the law for a child under 6 to be on bunkbeds and to take them down. There is railings all the way around the top bunk. So I am wondering if it really is illeagle for his 5 year old daughter to be on the top bunk or is her mother being a spaz again?

  1. That lady is a nut. I just bought my sons 3 and 5 a set of bunkbeds. If they were illegal they would have more restrictions on them. They are beds not guns. She need to get a hobby

  2. There is no law, that women is just being difficult!

  3. She's completely ignorant.........There is no law against children and bunkbeds that I have ever heard of.  As long as there are railings on the bed, the 5 year old should be perfectly fine on it.

  4. shes being a spaz...theres  no age limit on bunk beds lol.  tell her to get  lost.

  5. I personally know this mother and she is a very controlling spaz. What you don’t know is that the little girl who is 5 years old is just as big and smart as a 7 year old. I think the mother is over reacting and has been tying to make things stressful for everyone, she has dragged out everything. Moving 3 or 4 times in just a month or two and made the kids switch schools each time (responsible?). And as far as being responsible I do recall the little girl having a black and blue eye from jumping on the couch at her mother’s house while the mother and grandma was their and falling onto the coffee table. I think they both just need to grow up and start acting like adults. The kids are both so excited about the beds and I think if they teach them how to use the bed and not to play around on them they will be just fine!

  6. the recommended earliest age to use a top bunk IS 6 yrs old- but it's just a recommendation- from the manufacturers no doubt to get out of lawsuits should a very young child fall out or down and get really hurt. You need to use your judgement. I just got my grandsons bunkbeds. The 12 year old has to sleep on the bottom because he has night terrors and sometimes runs out of bed, screaming in terror but he's not awake, so I can't take the chance of him being on the top where he could really get hurt during a middle of the night episode- even though he's 5'2" and over 100 lbs. SO his 5 yr old brother, who is a mere 29 pounds and just a spindly little peanut is on the top bunk- we've had no problem at all with this arrangement. BUT to answer your question, why don't you just appease the woman for the time being- most bunkbeds come apart to make 2 twin beds. Just do this if it's an option and put it back together when the kid turns 6. Don't give her any more fuel, especially over something so silly. I was a divorced mother and know plenty of them. It's so much easier if both parents try to stay mature and do what's best for the kids without getting stupid or laying blame.

  7. She is totally being a spaz. there is no law about bunk beds.  The new bunk beds have rails all the way around them so the kids can't fall out very easily. My boys got bunk beds for their  birthdays the year that they turned 5 and 2.  We haven't had any trouble and they are now 9 and 6.

  8. spaz theres no  legal age for bunkbeds gosh that mom is high or really wants her kids +shes  high or something one agian gosh

  9. My daughter got a bunk bed when she turned 5 and not once has had an accident. As long as he teaches them how to be careful on one and why. Then theyll be fine. He needs to tell her to mind her own business.

  10. There is no law about it, but is this something he really needs to fight?  You've got to pick your battles & save your effort for the really important things.

I got my kids bunkbeds when they were 2 & 4.  Our *family* rule, though, was no sleeping on the top until you were 5.  So, they slept on opposite sides of the bottom bunk until the oldest was 5 (heads on opposite ends).  And, until then, they reserved the top bunk for their secret clubhouse :D

  11. She's lost her mind.  There is no law concerning kids and bunkbeds.  Just common sense. Make sure the kid is able to get up and down the steps easily and of course the railings around the bed and they should be fine.

  12. She wants to have control of things. There is not an age limit on how old a child can be to sleep on an bunk bed. If she is so concerned then just take down the bunk beds to make 2 twin size beds (if that is an option) and call it the day. Let her know that the well fair of your children is the most important thing in your life at this moment and you are doing all that you can do to make sure that their needs are being met.

  13. It is not against the law, but it might not be very safe depending on how sturdy the 5 y.o is with climbing stairs.  I have a bunk bed for my boys, and my son whom is five sleeps on top.  He is real good with stairs though, and very good at climbing anything.  They have a wooden bunk bed with rails that go three quarters the way along on the side with the stairs, and all the way on the other sides.  He really should get a bunk with the side rails.

  14. its not illegal but 6 is the recommended age. I know lots of 5 yr olds that sleep on the top with a rail & I think it's fine. If their mom wants him to wait then I think he should. She is the mom and if she is being a spaz he should let things calm down and not give her a reason to to nag him.

  15. Google bunkbeds and you will see on every bunkbed label there is a warning that children under the age of 6 should not be on the top bunk.  It's a warning put there for a reason.  I think the mother is being quite reasonable...maybe you should follow her example.

  16. she is probally being a spaz bc i had bunk beds when i was like 5 or six and my lil sis and me shared them and i had the top bunk and she had the bottom bunk and she was only like three

  17. i think it is perfectly fine for the kids to have bunk beds... as long as (if there was one) the bed wetter is on the bottom
