Kids to Ski or Snowboard?

I have 4 kids aged 4, 6, 8 & 11. I want to take them skiing for the first time. I ski but never snowboarded. My wife has done neither. I think I want us all to learn to ski. I would not be surprised if some or all of the kids want to snowboard instead. What should I do?

  1. I think that it is best to start them out on skiing. Then, once they have gotten relativley comfortable on the slopes, give them to choice to switch to snowboarding. Or let them do both, like me.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Have them snowboard, get them a lesson.

  3. My son started out skiing at age 6.  I would stick with that for the 4 and 6 year olds.  Most 8 year olds have the balance and muscle necessary to control a snowboard.  Does the 8 year old skateboard?  Snowboarding requires the same muscle groups.   My son at age 7 took off on a snowboard (he started skateboarding at age 2)  and has not stopped snowboarding.  He is now 27.  It is a far more exciting sport.  Make sure your kids are wearing a helmet...this is the newest and best safety device for kids of all ages.  Adults should also wear them but most do not.  Have fun!

  4. WOW....I would say deffinatley snow boarding I love snowboarding and I started at about age 6..........it helps if you start at a small hill in a reletives yard........I wouldnt just go to a major place right away........plus snowboarding is more kid like

  5. Skiing is not easier than snowboarding, and vice versa. Neither is more fun than the other. If you are a skater, you should go with skiing. If you are a boarder, snowboarding. Unless you want a challenge, of course!
