Question:

Knee injury in swimming?

I am a swimmer, i swim 3 hours everyday with dryland. For the past couple weeks, my knee has been killing me all day long even when im not moving it and swimming. It hurts under the knee cap if that makes any sense at all.

So im wondering, what could be wrong and could this be serious? And is this possible to be derived from swimming?

I havent seen a doctor yet and i've been on advil and icepacks

  1. oh yes, definitely. although i'm not a competitive swimmer (i'm a competitive runner& swimmer), i'm VERY close friends with all the swim members in our school team.

the knee injury is MOST common for breastrokers because of their whip-like kick. (however, people who do free, back, and fly have this injury too) when they flex & extend their leg, the swimming force aims right at the tibial collateral ligament. i'd take a couple of days off and see how it feels then. or put an ice bag on it for 15-20 minutes every 2 hours. if it doesn't feel any better, visit a docto, or better yet, a physical therapists who can show you stretches

also, you say that you do dryland. so that's like squat jumps, abs, running, sprints, etc. lots of runners get knee problems mostly from overuse, or when you pound too much when you do dryland, that makes your knee hurt a lot.

i hope you feel better though! =)

  2. this happens from swimming BREASTROKE..alot breaststrokers get that alot do u swim breaststoke??

  3. I have this same problem..mine actually pops out though.  It could be form swimming and if so it IS caused by swimming a lot of brestsroke.  I'm a swimmer too... and I have that same problem b/c of swimming lots of breststroke and b/c of my growing patterns.. I would go and see a doctor right a way and wear a knee brace during dryland.  It may look stupid but in the long run it helps soooo much.  I have one  that's like this:

I'd still go to the doctor!!  If you leave this unchecked it could get worse and end your swimming career!!  You wouldn't want that now would you??  If you're going to get a knee brace I'd wait and see the doctor first b/c you might need to get a different one or they could give it to you for free!!  If it still bothers you the same amount after you see the doctor tell them and they might let you tape it so you can have the support during your swimming. I'd wait a couple weeks though after you see the doctor to see if it helps any.

Anyways, good luck with swimming career fellow swimmer!!!

    EDIT:

Another thing is you could also be like me. I grew a lot and fast when I was really little and my theigh muscles didn't catch up with the growth rate.  Maybe that's your problem??  IDK

  4. visit a PT (physical Therapist)
