  1. The directions mean knit 1 row, purl 1 row, knit 1 row, and  purl 1, so you have 4 full rows total.  also there is an error later in the pattern, after the 9 rows of stockinnette,  you would end on the wrong side, so you would purl  across again.

The pattern fully written out would be:

    cast on 44,

    R (row)1: Knit

    R2: Knit

    R3: Knit

R4: Purl          first set of stockinnette, end inside of the hat

    R5: Knit

    R6: Purl

R7: Purl          on the outside of the hat

    R8: Purl

    R9: Knit

    R10: Purl

    R11: Knit

R12: Purl        ends on the inside if the hat

    R13: Knit

    R14: Purl

    R16: Knit

    R17: Purl

R18: Purl   on the outside of hat

repeat rows 8- 17 once more for the second set or 9 rows stockinnette,

R27:  Knit 2 together across the row

then cut your yarn at least a foot long, more if you are going to sew it from the top of the hat down to the bottom, and draw the yarn though all the stitches on your needle and pull tight to gather it up and then sew the seam and add your pompom.

A great site to look at if you get stuck is www.knittinghelp.com

    hope that helps:)

  2. When you're knitting, typically the 'knit' stitch is the front side, and the 'purl' stitch is the back side, unless of course you're doing patterns and textured work.  A stockinette stitch is the most typical stitch, where you knit across one row (front side) then purl across the row (back side).  This produces what you typically see when you think of basic knitting.

  3. Stockinette stitch means to Knit one row, Purl the next row.  You would do this for 4 rows Meaning Knit a row, purl a row, knit a row, purl a row.

  4. The stockinette stitch is knitting a row, then purling a row.  You want to start with knitting a row, unless otherwise instructed in the pattern.

    You need to:

    Knit one row

    Purl one row

    Knit one row

    Purl one row

Hope this helps, and have fun!!
